Stress/corrosion of stainless steel, and ferrous metal with the use of conventional insulation systems
External stress cracking or environmental stress corrosion refers to stress corrosion cracking of austenitic stainless steel. The product in the vessel, tank, piping. is supplying heat that promotes the cracking scenario. Product leaks, or spillage adds to the problem. The normal moisture penetrating the conventional insulation systems, contains chlorides which attack the substrate and is the most contributing factor causing corrosion and stress cracking. Temperatures from about 130 to 265 degrees Fahrenheit seem to be the range where the ESCC occurs.
Sources of Chlorides
Conventional insulation systems will contain chlorides ranging from 10 ppm to upwards of 1000 ppm; problems really begin to occur when moisture moves the chlorides from the material to the surface of the stainless or non-ferrous surfaces of the vessel.
