Technical Specifications for DTC Rust Coating
Uses
Used as a primer and/or finishing coat for protection against corrosion of metallic structures. It is also used for maintaining and repairing galvanized, zinc-sprayed structures.
Appearance/Composition
The Coating is a one-pack compound containing 99.995% pure electrolytic zinc dust. The product also contains synthetic resins, pigments, and aromatic solvents. The composition cannot be compared to two-pack sprays (many of which contain isocyanates), zinc-rich paints or other one-pack products. The purity of the zinc content is such that it contains no lead, cadmium, toluene, xylene, methylene chloride nor methylethyl-ketones (MEK) On application, dries to minimum 96% zinc content in the dry film.
Handling
The Coating is not hazardous, although the manufacturer recommends that the usual safety precautions for paint work should be taken.
Drying time
It is touch-dry in about 10 minutes, depending on atmospheric and work conditions. It is mechanically dry after approximately 48 hours. The Coating continues to harden further when exposed to air humidity. As it oxidizes, a layer of zinc salts is slowly formed building up a supplementary protective barrier. A new coat can be applied after one hour. Further coats of paint can be applied after 24 hours, if necessary. (Re DUPLEX system)
Test Results
Independent tests have been conducted at the University of Ghent (Belgium), Fulmer Materials Technology in BNF Technology Metals Centre in Oxford, England, part of BBA programme (British Board of Agreement ) FMPA (Forschungs-un Materiaosprufungsanstalt, Germany) and Laboratorio General de Ensayos y de Investigaciones Barcelona, Spain. Full details are available on request.
Non Toxic
The Coating in its dry film is non toxic in contact with drinking water following the "Wrc Tests on Effect on Water Quality (B.S. 6920). It has a zero surface spread of flame according to BS.
Combines both the qualities of a galvanized coating and a zinc paint
This combination offers advantages that can not be achieved by either galvanizing or painting alone.
It can be applied on a clean or mildly rusted surface as well as over an existing coat
This technique provides an excellant resistance to corrosion and also a good adhesion. The Coating corrodes much more slowly than pure zinc. The zinc salts which are caused by the corrosion of the zinc fill up the natural porosity of the coating.
It is resistant to corrosion because of its organic components
The organic surface withstands the atmospheric attacks and increases the durability of the coating. The coatings can be touched up and maintained on rusty surfaces after all loose particles have been removed by an abrasive procedure.
Preparation of the surface
New smooth surface:
Sandblast Sa 2.5 roughness degree Ra 12.5 is necessary.
Old, galvanized or rusty surfaces:
remove loose particles and degrease (steam, degreaser...)
Repainted surfaces
remove paint with grit blasting or other abrasion techniques. The surface must be free of mill scale, oil, paint, and grease.
The coating can be applied on damp surfaces or in moist conditions.
